Now ragging is a thing of the past!
An increasing proportion of hygiene and wet wipes along with a lower water content have led to a significant change in wastewater composition, resulting in massive ragging in sewage treatment plant pumps. As a consequence, the financial expenses for cleaning, maintenance, and repair have risen enormously for wastewater utilities in recent years.
To sustainably solve this problem, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen conducted a fluid-mechanics investigation into the ragging behavior of single-channel impeller pumps on behalf of Pleiger Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG. From this research, a flow-optimized impeller geometry for wastewater pumps was developed. It provides a significant improvement in flow regarding susceptibility to ragging in the inlet area of the impeller, resulting in significantly increased operational reliability at considerably lower maintenance costs.
The new, optimized impeller geometry reliably prevents costly ragging in pumping stations. Because it was consistently designed from the outset with the option for cost-effective retrofitting of existing pump systems, it is suitable not only for use in new installations.
